Who is Devone Payne?
Howard Devone Payne was the second head football coach for the Northeast Louisiana State located in Monroe, Louisiana and he held that position for four seasons, from 1954 until 1957. His coaching record at Northeast Louisiana State was 15 wins, 22 losses, and 1 tie. As of the conclusion of the 2007 season, this ranks him eighth at University of Louisiana at Monroe in total wins and fifth at University of Louisiana at Monroe in winning percentage. He died in 1958 in a hospital where he had been undergoing surgery for ulcers. He was 44.
In 2007 Payne was inducted into the ULM Sports Hall of Fame. He is also a member of the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, having been inducted in 1992 posthumously.
