Who is Eadwulf Cudel?

Eadwulf Cudel or Cutel was Earl of Bernicia in the early eleventh century. He was the son of Waltheof I, ealdorman of Bamburgh, who ruled from Bamburgh Castle on the Northumbrian coast.

Eadwulf succeeded his brother Uhtred the Bold, Earl of Northumbria, in Bernicia following Uhtred's murder in 1016. Unlike Uhtred, Eadwulf succeeded to rule only the northern part of Northumbria as Earl of Bernicia.

In 1018, he was defeated by King Malcolm II of Scotland in the Battle of Carham, resulting in the loss of Lothian.

Eadwulf died in 1019, and was succeeded by Uhtred's son, Ealdred.
