Edward Barton Hamm was an American athlete, who won the gold medal in the long jump at the 1928 Summer Olympics held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, becoming the first Arkansan to win a gold medal. The Atlanta Journal called him "the South’s first world champion in any sport." Hamm had set a World Record of 25-11 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Cambridge,MA, on July 7,
