Who is Ekaitz Saies?

Ekaitz Saies is a Spanish sprint canoer who has been competing since the late 2000s. He won a gold medal in the K-1 4 x 200 m event at the 2009 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Dartmouth.

In 2001 he tested positive to Nandrolone and was banned for six months by the RFEP. He claimed to have a genetic mutation that induced his body to produce the chemical and offered as proof the fact that his father also tested positive to Nandrolone. However a jury determined that such genetic mutations have not been recorded anywhere in the medical literature and in 2010 after his retirement he admitted to have lied to the jury and revealed to a member of the RFEP that his father had been injecting himself with Nandrolone to make is claim more credible. He was latter ordered to take down his website where he had claimed his innocence for so many years.
