Who was Ellis O. Knox?
Dr. Ellis O'Neal Knox was the first African American to be awarded a Ph.D. on the West Coast of the United States. Knox received his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1922 from the University of California, Berkeley and his doctorate in the history and philosophy of education from the University of Southern California in the 1931.
