Who was Gilbert Godsmark?
Gilbert Godsmark was an English association footballer, who played as an inside forward for Newton Heath in 1900. Godsmark began his career at Ashford, and, on the recommendation of forward Bob Donaldson, became Newton Heath's first signing for which a fee had to be paid when he joined the club for £40 in January 1900. However, his stay at Newton Heath was curtailed by a call-up to the British Army three months later, after just nine league appearances and four goals. With the Army, Godsmark served in the Second Boer War. However, after just nine months in South Africa, Godsmark died from an unknown disease.
