Who was Goldwyn Arthur Martin?
Goldwyn Arthur Martin, CC, QC was a justice of the Court of Appeal for Ontario and one of the most prominent experts in criminal law in Canada.
Martin was born in Huntsville, Ontario. He graduated from Osgoode Hall Law School in 1938 and became a defence lawyer in 1940. During that career, he has never lost a case with any of his 60 clients facing murder charges. He was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 1973, and retired in 1988.
He was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1991 and further promoted to a Companion of that order in 1997. He received Doctor of Laws honorary degrees from the Queen's University and the Law Society of Upper Canada.
Martin never married. Throughout his career, he relied on his older sister Arlene to assist with his work.
The Ontario Criminal Lawyers' Association presents the G. Arthur Martin Criminal Justice Medal for an outstanding contribution to criminal justice.
