Gus Pope

Who was Gus Pope?

Augustus Russell "Gus" Pope was an American athlete who competed mainly in the discus throw.

He was born in Seattle, Washington.

Pope competed for the United States in the 1920 Summer Olympics held in Antwerp, Belgium, in the discus throw where he won the bronze medal.

In June 1921, Pope was the individual points leader with 10 points at the first NCAA track and field championships; Pople competed for the University of Washington and won both the shot put and the discus events at the 1921 NCAA championships.

Four years later he finished fourth in the discus throw competition.
