Who was Guy de la Bretaigne?
Guy de la Bretaigne was a critic, dandy, and man of letters. He was a recluse but had a wide acquaintanceship in the 19th century Paris world of arts and letters. His pose was one of studied indifference. A characteristic Bretaigne quotation is from an 1854 letter to Charles Baudelaire: "The critic can on occasion encounter something of interest--yet even that does not make it interesting."
