Who was Harold J. Powers?

Harold Jay Powers was the 36th Lieutenant Governor of California, having served from 1953-1959 under fellow liberal Republican Governor Goodwin Knight.

In 1962, Powers attracted political attention by his refusal to endorse Richard M. Nixon for governor in the general election contest that year against the Democrat Edmund G. "Pat" Brown, Sr.. He died at the age of 96 in Modoc County, California in 1996.
