Harry McCue

Who was Harry McCue?

Harry McCue was an Irish soccer player who played in the League of Ireland during the 1950s.

Born in Dublin, McCue was a late arrival to League of Ireland football at the age of 26, having played for St. Paul's in the Leinster League previous to this. After impressing in a pre-season friendlies for Paul's against Bohemians, he was soon snapped up by Bohs. He made his debut in the League of Ireland Shield against Cork Athletic on 12 September 1953. He soon became a permanent fixture in the Bohemian starting XI. Harry won an Irish amateur international cap against Scotland at the end of the 1953/54 season and actually captained the side on that occasion.

Despite interest from Glentoran, Harry signed for Waterford in 1955. From there, he moved to Limerick and won a league winners medal with them in 1960. He signed for Sligo Rovers the following season and after 1 season there, he retired from league football. His son, also named Harry, had a distinguished career playing for Shamrock Rovers and Dundalk F.C. amongst others.
