Who is Harry Osterman?

Harry Osterman is a Democratic member of the Chicago City Council, representing the 48th ward. He previously served in the Illinois House of Representatives, representing the 14th District from 2000 to 2011.

Osterman began his career as an aide to 48th ward Alderman Mary Ann Smith, then he worked as a staff liaison to the Chicago Police Department and the Cook County State's Attorney’s Office.

Harry Osterman was originally appointed as to the state house to complete the term of Carol Ronen, who had been elected to the Illinois Senate.

Claiming a "background with law enforcement," some of his major legislative efforts have focused on areas of public safety. He helped get tougher penalties for violent and repeat domestic abusers and worked to increase penalties for unlicensed drivers. He also helped the CAPS programs in the 20th and 24th police districts secure state grants. Osterman is a strong advocate of gun control, currently serving as an honorary Board Member of the Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence.
