Who was Hendrik Conscience?

Henri "Hendrik" Conscience was a Belgian writer. He was a pioneer in writing in Dutch language after the Belgian Revolution at a time when Belgium was largely dominated by French. Conscience fought as a Belgian revolutionary and is best known for the romantic nationalist book, De Leeuw van Vlaanderen, inspired by the Medieval Franco-Flemish War.
