Who is Hermann von Schmid?
Hermann von Schmid was a German novelist and dramatist, born at Weizenkirchen, Austria, and educated at Munich. In 1870 he became manager of the Gärtnerthor Theatre in Munich, and resigned the position after a few years. His plays, collected in 1853, include several historical dramas, such as Karl Stuart and Columbus, but his greater success was in portraying peasant life, as in Die Z'widerwurz'n and Der Tatzelwurm. In his novels, too, such as Almenrausch und Edelweiss, Der Habermeister, etc., he was at his best when describing Bavarian customs. His collected works appeared in 50 volumes.
