Who is Hugh B. Price?

Hugh B. Price is President and Chief Executive Officer of the National Urban League. He became the seventh president of the organization on July 1, 1994. After graduating from Yale Law School in 1966, Mr. Price began his career as a neighborhood attorney with the New Haven Legal Assistance Association. He then joined Cogen, Holt Associates, an urban affairs consulting firm in New Haven. Mr. Price closed out his career in Connecticut by serving as Human Resources Administrator for the City of New Haven. In 1978, Mr. Price joined the Editorial Board of The New York Times, where he wrote editorials on a broad range of topics, such as telecommunications, education, criminal justice and urban policy. He then moved to public broadcasting as Senior Vice President of Thirteen/WNET New York, the nation's largest public television station. In 1984, he became director of the national production division, which produces such legendary PBS series as Great Performances and Nature. In 1988, Mr. Price entered the world of philanthropy as Vice President of the Rockefeller Foundation. Mr. Price serves on the boards of Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, Bell Atlantic, Sears Roebuck Company, Educational Testing Service and the Urban Institute. His articles have appeared in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Education Week, Review of Black Political Economy and Phi Delta Kappan. Hugh Price has received many honorary degrees and awards, including the Medal of Honor from Yale Law School and an honorary degree from his other alma mater, Amherst College.
