Who is Ingrid Roscoe?

Ingrid Mary Roscoe, FSA is a writer on English art and Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire.

Ingrid Roscoe was born at Rugby School in 1944 to Arthur Allen and Else, who had married after only meeting three times. Her father died during Ingrid's childhood, her mother subsequently marrying Brigadier Kenneth Hargreaves who would become Lord-Lieutenant between 1970 and 1978.

Roscoe abandoned her English degree at the University of Nottingham to marry Marshall Roscoe, at the age of 19, and had three children. She was very interested in the arts, publishing articles and then studying at the University of Leeds, completing a BA and PhD. Her doctoral thesis on Peter Scheemakers was published by the Walpole Society. She stayed on at Leeds University to lecture in the 1990s. On 15 July 2010 Roscoe was given an honorary degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, by the university.

Roscoe is editor-in-chief and co-author of A Biographical Dictionary of Sculptors in Britain, 1660–1851, published in November 2009. The book is an update to Rupert Gunnis's Dictionary of British Sculptors 1660–1851.

Roscoe has served in the Lieutenancy of West Yorkshire since 1994, when she was made a deputy Lieutenant, and became the Lord Lieutenant of West Yorkshire in 2004. She has eight grandchildren and is the patron of numerous groups.
