Who is Ivan Lafayette?
Ivan C. Lafayette represented the 34th District in the New York State Assembly, which comprises portions of Jackson Heights, Corona and Elmhurst.
First elected to the Assembly in 1976, he served in a variety of capacities both in government and within the Democratic Party, including as a former District Leader and New York State Democratic Committeeman. He announced he would not run for reelection in 2008.
Originally from Monticello, New York, Sullivan County, New York, Lafayette attended schools in Brooklyn. He received his B.A. from Brooklyn College and moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, where he and his family have lived since 1956.
He served a two-year stint in the United States Army from 1952-1954.
