Who is J.G.A. Pocock?
John Greville Agard Pocock, as a writer known as J. G. A. Pocock, is a historian of political thought. He is especially known for his studies of republicanism in the early modern period, his work on the history of English Common Law, his treatment of Edward Gibbon and other Enlightenment historians, and, in historical method, for his contributions to the history of political discourse.
He was born in England. After spending most of his early life in New Zealand he moved to the United States in 1966, where since 1975 he has had tenure at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore.
