Who is J. Kevin Barlow?
J. Kevin Barlow is Mi'kmaq from the Indian Island, New Brunswick. He is Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Aboriginal AIDS Network based in Ottawa, Ontario.
Barlow has worked in the aboriginal health field for over 20 years. He has presented his research in New Zealand, United States, Mexico, and across Canada.
He has worked primarily in the HIV/AIDS sector for the past 17 years, and is Principal Investigator on a number of grants exploring cultural competence, mental health, and historical trauma. His leadership and advocacy has earned him a national award for excellence in aboriginal programming.
In April 2013, it was revealed that Barlow had plagiarized the work of another HIV/AIDS researcher for a document produced by him for the Aboriginal Healing Foundation in Ottawa, Ontario. In an investigation by the Ottawa Citizen, it was further revealed that Barlow had paid the researcher whom he plagiarized $3,250 as a result of a human rights settlement in 2007.
