Who is Jackie Maarohanye?
Jackie Maarohanye, also known as Mama Jackey, Mama Jackie, or Angel of Soweto is known for running the Ithuteng Trust School in Soweto, South Africa. The Ithuteng Trust School was set up in 1997 by Maarohanye with the help of President Nelson Mandela. The original goal of the institution was to specifically help disenfranchised youths, including rape victims, drug addicts, rapists, juvenile offenders, and other victims of abuse. Her story inspired the film Ithuteng.
In 2006, the TV program Carte Blanche claimed that her pupils who claimed to be victims of various abuses were lying and prompted by Maarohanye in order to receive more funding.
In 2009, the school was closed.
