Who was Jakub Grajchman?
Jakub Grajchman was a Slovak poet and dramatist.
Born in Hybe, Grajchman studied in Prešov. He lived most of his life in Liptovský Mikuláš and Liptovský Hrádok, where he worked as a notary and judicial advisor, before returning to his birthplace, where he also died.
A supporter of Ľudovít Štúr in his Slovak language standartisation programme, Grajchman did not rank among the most prominent Slovak-writing authors of the period. Nevertheless, his works proved very popular with the common folk, especially his collection of poems, Básnické spisy Jakuba Grajchmana, published in 1890. Apart from writing poetry, Grajchman was also a dramatist, mostly authoring plays for amateur theaters. However, one of his plays, Kto zaplatí nohavice? from 1867, was adapted and broadcast as a radio play in the 20th century.
