Who was James Latane Noel, Jr.?

James Latane Noel Jr. was a United States federal judge.

Born in Pilot Point, Texas, Noel received a B.S. in civil engineering from Southern Methodist University in 1931, a B.S. in Commerce from that institution in 1932, and an LL.B. from Southern Methodist University School of Law in 1937. He was an Assistant district attorney of Dallas County, Texas from 1937 to 1938. He was an Attorney state general of Texas from 1939 to 1942 and from 1945 to 1946. U.S. Naval Reserve, World War II. He was in private practice in Houston, Texas from 1946 to 1961.

Noel was a federal judge on the United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. Noel received a recess appointment from President John F. Kennedy on October 5, 1961, to a new seat created by 75 Stat. 80; nominated on January 15, 1962. He was confirmed by the United States Senate on March 16, 1962, and received his commission on March 17, 1962. He assumed senior status on December 15, 1976. Noel served in that capacity until August 29, 1997, due to his death.

He died in Houston, Texas.
