James Loren Martin

Who was James Loren Martin?

James Loren Martin was a Vermont lawyer, politician, and federal judge.

Martin was born in Landgrove, Vermont. He was educated in the schools of Londonderry, Vermont and Marlow, New Hampshire and received an LL.B. from Albany Law School in 1869. He was in private practice in Londonderry, Vermont from 1869 to 1882. He was state's attorney for Windham County from 1874 to 1876. He served in the Vermont House of Representatives from 1874-1882 and 1892, and was speaker from 1878 to 1882. He was in private practice in Brattleboro from 1882 to 1898. Martin was a state commissioner of taxes, 1888, 1890–1892, and 1894. He served as U.S. Attorney for the District of Vermont from 1898 to 1906.

Martin received a recess appointment to the United States District Court for the District of Vermont from President Theodore Roosevelt on October 20, 1906, to the seat vacated by Hoyt H. Wheeler. Formally nominated on December 3, 1906, he was confirmed by the Senate on December 11, 1906, and received his commission the same day. Martin remained on the court until he died on January 14, 1915 in Montpelier, Vermont.

Martin was a Universalist.
