Who was Jan Piotr Sapieha?

Jan Piotr Sapieha was a Lithuanian nobleman; starosta at Uświat, king's colonel, member of the Sejm, commander of the Polish- Lithuanian crew at the Kremlin, nicknamed Hetman.

Son of Paweł Sapieha and Anna Chodkiewiczówna, married to Zofia Weiher, father of Paweł Jan Sapieha.

Participant of the Polish-Swedish War - brought a private chorągiew of 100 Cossacks, and commanded he right wing of Polish-Lithuanian army during the famous Battle of Kircholm in 1605. Participant of the Polish-Muscovite War, where he commanded the failed siege of Troitse-Sergiyeva Lavra in 1608 and later fought anti-Polish Muscovite forces near Moscow.

He died on October 15 during the siege of Moscow Kremlin, at his own will buried at Leipalingis, Lithuania.
