Who is Janice Chaffin?
Janice Chaffin is Group President, Consumer Business Unit,
responsible for the worldwide consumer business. In this role she leads
engineering, sales, alliances, marketing, public relations, and
customer care.
Most recently Janice served as executive vice president and chief
marketing officer. In this role she led the company’s marketing,
communications, and branding teams worldwide and led the team
responsible for the development of Symantec’s corporate strategy. She
championed a customer experience team to keep customers as the
cornerstone of the company and in 2006 launched a brand campaign
focused on helping customers find "Confidence in a connected world."
As the first CMO at Symantec, Chaffin built a global marketing
operation that has gained broad industry recognition, including being
named as a leader in the IDC Marketing Performance Matrix. In 2005, she
integrated marketing teams from the VERITAS and Symantec merger
creating a new marketing infrastructure for one of the largest software
companies in the world. As Symantec has grown, Chaffin globalized its
marketing function, expanding the consumer, enterprise, field, partner,
and corporate marketing efforts. She created new customer segmentation
models and introduced innovative marketing tactics including the use of
social media. To improve marketing efficiencies, Chaffin created a
formal marketing operations team closely aligned with sales which
plans, monitors, and measures campaign results.
Prior to Symantec, Chaffin spent 21 years at Hewlett-Packard (HP) in
marketing and general management. As a founding member of HP’s Unix
server business unit, Chaffin played a key role in building the
multi-billion dollar business, achieving market leadership in various
segments, and bringing the first mainframe class systems to market. She
established the HP Solutions organization which included software
development labs in India, Japan and the U.S. and also created the HP
Enterprise Marketing and Solutions organization through the merger with
Compaq.
Chaffin graduated summa cum laude from the University of California,
San Diego. She earned a master’s degree in business administration from
the University of California, Los Angeles where she was a Henry Ford
Scholar.
She serves on the board of Informatica Corporation and also is a
member of the CMO Council Advisory Board and the Industry Advisory
Board for the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied
Science. In 2006, Diversity Journal profiled her as one of the “Women
Worth Watching” because of her community initiative and achievements.
She is also a patroness of the National Charities League and is a past
recipient of the YWCA Tribute to Women in Industry award.
