Who was Jay Fliegelman?

Jay Fliegelman was the Coe Professor in American Literature at Stanford University and a leading figure in American studies. He died on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007 at his home in Menlo Park. He was 58. Fliegelman, whose primary interest was in American literary and cultural history from 1620 to 1860, was one of the foremost scholars in the field of American studies. He is remembered for showing how almost any cultural artifact could speak to the most urgent and fascinating questions of American history.
