Who was Jocelyn Field Thorpe?
Sir Jocelyn Field Thorpe FRS was an English chemist who discovered the Thorpe reaction and the Thorpe-Ingold effect.
Born in London on December 1, 1872, one of nine children and the sixth son, of Mr. and Mrs. W.G. Thorpe of the Middle Temple. He attended Worthing College, King's College, London, and the Royal College of Science. He earned his Ph.D in organic chemistry under Victor Meyer at Heidelberg.
