Who was John Bampfylde?

John Bampfylde was an English politician. He was a member of an old Devonshire family, the younger brother of Sir Coplestone Bampfylde, 3rd Baronet. He is not to be confused with his great-nephew, John Codrington Bampfylde.

By his first marriage to Elizabeth Basset, he had no children. By his second marriage to Margaret Warre, daughter and heir of Sir Francis Warre, 1st Baronet, he had a son and two daughters:

Coplestone Warre Bampfylde, married Mary Knight and died without issue.

Elizabeth Bampfylde, died unmarried.

Margaretta Bampfylde, married on 31 December 1753 George Tyndale.

He inherited Hestercombe House from his father-in-law in 1718 and began to lay out gardens there. The present gardens are largely the work of his son.
