Who was John Butt?
Bishop John Baptist Butt was a Roman Catholic bishop in the Archdiocese of Southwark and Titular Bishop of Sebastopolis in Thracia.
Butt was born in Richmond upon Thames, Surrey. On 18 December 1884, aged 58, Butt was appointed an Auxiliary Bishop in the Archdiocese of Southwark as well as Titular Bishop of Milo, and ordained several months later. He had been consecrated by Bishops William Weathers, Arthur George Riddell and William Vaughan.
On 12 April 1897, he resigned as the Bishop of Southwark, and was appointed as Titular Bishop of Sebastopolis. On 1 November 1899, aged 73, he died, holding the position of Bishop Emeritus of Southwark. He had been a bishop for almost 15 years.
