Who is John Cordes?

John Cordes was a detective in the New York Police Department and the only detective to win the department's Medal of Honor twice. He was awarded it first in 1923 after he suffered five gunshot wounds when he stumbled into a Manhattan cigar store robbery. His second Medal of Honor was awarded in 1927 for his work in solving the kidnapping of real estate tycoon Abe Scharlin.

Cordes retired in 1949, and part of his career is mentioned in the book "NYPD: Stories of Survival from the Worlds Toughest Beat".
