Who is John Dizikes?

John Dizikes Ph.D. is a Professor Emeritus of American Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who served as Cowell College provost and who is a recipient of the UCSC Alumni Association's Distinguished Teaching Award.

Dizikes is the author of numerous articles and four books, and won the 1993 National Book Critics Circle Award for "Opera in America: A Cultural History." He also has an interest in thoroughbred horse racing, and in 2000 wrote a biography of Hall of Fame jockey Tod Sloan.

An award bearing his name is presented each year to deserving faculty in the UCSC humanities department.
