John G. Schwegmann
Businessperson, Politician
1911 – 1995
Who was John G. Schwegmann?
John Gerald Schwegmann, Jr., was a pioneer in the development of the modern supermarket. Based at Metairie, Louisiana, a large unincorporated city in Jefferson Parish, he owned eighteen stores in the New Orleans metropolitan area. He was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1960 to 1968 and the Louisiana State Senate for a single term from 1968 to 1972. And he was an elected member of the Louisiana Public Service Commission from 1975 to 1980.
A political maverick, he mounted an unconventional—and unsuccessful—campaign for governor of Louisiana in the 1971 Democratic primary election.
