Who was John Hare Powell?
John Hare Powell was an American agriculturist.
Powell was born in Philadelphia, and educated at Philadelphia College; he went into business and acquired wealth. He was secretary of the American legation in London 1807-11, and inspector general in the Pennsylvania militia 1814-15. He then devoted himself to agriculture, and did much to improve the breeds of cattle in the United States, and founded the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society in 1823. He published Hints for American Farmers, and Memoirs of the Pennsylvania Agricultural Society.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania State Senate.
