John II, Duke of Brittany
Noble person
1239 – 1305
Who was John II, Duke of Brittany?
John II was 3rd Earl of Richmond and Duke of Brittany from 1268 to his death. He was son of Duke John I and Blanche of Navarre. Also during this time, there is the dual use of "of Brittany" and "de Bretagne", the French translation.
On 22 January 1260, John married Beatrice of England, a daughter of King Henry III of England and Eleanor of Provence. They had six children:
Arthur II, Duke of Brittany
John of Brittany, Earl of Richmond
Marie of Brittany, wife of Guy III of Châtillon
Pierre of Brittany, Viscount de Leon
Blanche of Brittany, wife of Philip of Artois
Eleonore, Abbess of Fontevrault
He was killed during the celebrations surrounding the coronation of Pope Clement V in 1305. John was leading the pope's horse through the crowd. So many spectators had piled atop the walls that one of them crumbled and collapsed right on top of the unfortunate duke.
