Who was John L. Gibbs?
John La Porte Gibbs was a Minnesota legislator and the 14th Lieutenant Governor of Minnesota. He was born in Bradford County, Pennsylvania. Although much is not known about his early education, he attended Ann Arbor Law School, graduating in 1861. In 1862, he was elected County Attorney of Freeborn County, Michigan, which no longer exists as a county.
He served in the Minnesota House of Representatives four different times, serving as speaker in 1877 and 1885. He served as Lieutenant Governor under Governor David Marston Clough from January 5, 1897 to January 3, 1899. Gibbs married Martha Partridge Robson in 1867 and died in 1908 in Owatonna, Minnesota.
