Who is John Stanmeyer?

John Stanmeyer, is an American photojournalist based in Otis, Massachusetts.

His career began in Tampa, Florida at the Tampa Tribune where he began working on international assignments traveling to various African and European countries and India. He then shifted his focus to freelance work on Asian and Middle-Eastern events. His photographs are known for their powerful depictions of human suffering. His current project is a book on AIDS in Asia co-authored by his wife, Anastasia Stanmeyer. He is one of the founders of VII Photo Agency.

He is best known for his contributions to TIME Magazine and National Geographic. His work centered on Asian and Middle-Eastern political and human rights issues for the past 11 years and more recently on the environment and susatainability. Stanmeyer has received many honors including the Robert Capa, Magazine Photographer of the Year, as well as numerous World Press and Picture of the Year awards. He won a 2008 National Magazine Award for Photojournalism. His picture of African migrants on the shore of Djibouti city at night became World Press Photo of the Year 2013.
