Who is John Toro Rendón?
John Jairo Toro Rendón is a retired Colombian football referee. He is known for having refereed one match in the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France. The match was between Denmark and South Africa during which he handed out seven yellow cards and three reds, most of which were widely regarded as without merit. The Dansk Boldspil-Union protested against the referee after this match. The sending off of two Danish players was considered especially egregious and was most likely the reason he was never selected to referee in a World Cup again. The two Danes he sent off were both substitutes and had not already received a yellow card and none of their faults were regarded as worth more than a warning. The South African player sent off, a substitute as well, already had a yellow card but was sent off by a direct red card which was regarded as a very harsh decision.
