Who was John Wood Lewis, Sr.?
John Wood Lewis, Sr. was a lawyer and politician who served in the Confederate Congress during the American Civil War.
Lewis was born in Spartanburg County, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina state legislature, 1830–31; member of Georgia Senate, 1845; Senator from Georgia in the Confederate Congress, 1862-63. He was elected on April 7, 1862 after Robert Toombs, former Confederate States Secretary of State, declined at his election on Congress's opening session on February 18.
He died in Canton, Cherokee County, Georgia.
