Who was Jöns Budde?

Jöns Budde was a Franciscan monk from the Brigittine monastery in Naantali – near Turku, Finland – who lived in the 15th century. He is the earliest writer known by name in Finland.

Jöns Budde chiefly translated from Latin to Swedish, but he also wrote a few things of his own. Budde's works included the translation of whole books of the Bible into Swedish.

No evidence of the literary work carried on in the Dominican and Franciscan monasteries in Finland has been preserved.
