Who is José Policarpo?
José da Cruz Policarpo, officially referred to as José IV, Patriarch of Lisbon, though commonly just referred to as "Policarpo", is the Cardinal Patriarch Emeritus of Lisbon. Policarpo holds a doctorate in theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. He served from March 24, 1998 to May 18, 2013, and upon his resignation being accepted by Pope Francis, he was succeeded as Patriarch of Lisbon by the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Porto in Porto, Portugal, Manuel José Macário do Nascimento Clemente.
