Who was José María de Echeandía?
José María de Echeandía was twice Mexican governor of Alta California from 1825 to 1831 and again from 1832 to 1833.
Echeandía supported the Mexican government's secularization the Alta California missions and redistribution of the land holdings as land grant ranchos.
He continued living in California after the U.S. takeover in 1847 until his death in 1871.
