Who was Joseph Benjamin Tofflemire?
Dr. Joseph Benjamin Franklin Tofflemire was a Naval Hospital apprentice in both World War I and World War II. He is mostly noted for his invention in the field of dentistry, the Tofflemire matrix band. In 1946, Dr. Tofflemire invented a matrix retainer for his practice. According to the Journal of Operative Dentistry, Tofflemire described the use of an "arcuate" metal matrix band with his matrix retainer, which is similar to the Tofflemire bands in use today.
