Who is Joseph C. Szabo?
Joseph C. Szabo is the twelfth and current Federal Railroad Administrator of the United States. Nominated by President Barack Obama on March 20, 2009, he was confirmed by the United States Senate on April 29, 2009.
Szabo was born into a long time railroading family. He started his own railroading career in 1976 with the Illinois Central Railroad. He worked numerous positions, including as a yard switcher, road trainman and a commuter conductor. Szabo earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Relations from Governors State University in 1990. He served as the United Transportation Union's State Legislative Director in 1996. In addition to railroading, he served in local politics for more than 20 years. He was mayor of Riverdale, Illinois.
