Who was Joseph Patrick Dougherty?

Joseph Patrick Dougherty was an American Roman Catholic clergyman.

Born in Kansas City, Kansas, Dougherty was educated at the University of Portland in Oregon and St. Patrick Seminary in Menlo Park, California. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 14, 1930. He served as a professor at St. Edward Seminary in Kenmore, Washington, and vice-chancellor and chancellor of the Diocese of Seattle. He was also a diocesan consultor and director of the Society for the Propagation of the Faith.

On July 9, 1951, Dougherty was appointed the first Bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Yakima by Pope Pius XII. He received his episcopal consecration on the following September 26 from Archbishop Thomas Arthur Connolly, with Bishops Charles Daniel White and Hugh Aloysius Donohoe serving as co-consecrators. He attended all four sessions of the Second Vatican Council between 1962 and 1965. After eighteen years as Bishop of Yakima, he resigned on February 5, 1969; he was named Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California, and Titular Bishop of Altinum by Pope Paul VI on the same date. He died at age 65.
