Politician
1870 – 1943
Who was Joshua Whitsitt?
Joshua Thomas Hoskins Whitsitt was an Australian politician. Born in Ireland, where he was educated, he migrated to Tasmania as a youth, becoming a bank officer and farmer at Cooee. In 1909 he was elected to the Tasmanian House of Assembly as one of the members for Darwin, representing the Commonwealth Liberal Party. His erratic voting behaviour eventually led to his becoming an independent, successfully defending his seat in 1916 and 1919. In 1922, he transferred to federal politics, winning the federal seat of Darwin in the Australian House of Representatives for the Country Party, defeating sitting Nationalist member George Bell. He retired in 1925, returning to farming. Whitsitt died in 1943.
