Who was June Hutton?
Born June Marvel Cowan on August 11, 1919 in Bloomington, Illinois to parents Marvel Svea Williams and Odie Daniel Cowan. June and her older sister, Ina Ray Hutton, both grew up to be entertainers and performers during the Big Band era. Growing up, June attended Hyde Park High School in Chicago, as did her older sister, Ina. While attending high school, June worked in the dress department at Marshall Fields department store. After her graduation, June quit her job and went on to pursue her singing career. In her earlier days, she sang at the "Astor Roof" and appeared in a brief part on Max Baer's "Hi'ya Gentlemen." She was part of the Winston Trio, the Quintones and the Sande Williams Band. Later she became the female vocalist for Charlie Spivak & His Orchestra's singing group The Stardusters.
After Jo Stafford left The Pied Pipers in 1944, June was hired as her replacement. She went on to record with The Pied Pipers for six years, recording several hit records including the song, "Dream." In 1950, June left the Pied Pipers going solo on Decca. Then in 1952, she went on to the Capitol Records label, backed by an orchestra led by her husband, Axel Stordahl. She went on to record three hit records, "Say You're Mine Again," "No Stone Unturned," and "For the First Time."
