Who is Kale Kayihura?
General Edward Kalekezi Kayihura, more commonly known as Kale Kayihura, is a Ugandan lawyer, soldier and policeman. He is the Inspector General of Police of the Uganda Police Force, the highest rank in that branch of Uganda's government. He has served in that position since 2005 when he replaced General Edward Katumba Wamala as the IGP. General Kayihura is still an active member of Uganda's military and was previously the Head of the Country's Revenue Protection Services as well as a Senior Commander during the Congo War. He is the son of the late John Komuluyange Kalekezi, one of the Ugandans who fought for the African Great Lakes nation's independence in 1962. His mother is Catherine Mukarwamo, first-born child of the first county chief of then Nyakabande, the late Nyamihana, father to Justice Joseph Mulenga Nyamihana, a retired president of the East African Court of Justice. They hail from Uganda's Kisoro district that borders the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda. He studied his primary school at Mutolere primary school and lower high school at Mutolere secondary school under the care of his maternal grandmother, the late Sofia Nyamihana. His brilliance in school caught the attention of his paternal uncle, late Frank Gasasira, an accomplished civil servant who took over responsibility of his school and enrolled him to the best boys'catholic school then, St Mary's College Kisubi for Advanced Secondary School certificate. He excelled in Drama, History, Literature and Economics and obtained maximum grades to join Makerere University Kampala for an honours Bachelors in Law degree. His maximum grade again earned him admission to London School where he obtained a Masters degree in Law. Straight from London school and aged 26, he joined the National Resistance Army, a rebel outfit that fought the regime of Dr. Milton Obote and captured power in 1986. He has since grown in military ranks and held multiple offices in the army and public service. He is married to Angella, a Kenyan of Rwandese origin and had two children. She too is a grand daughter to Rudahigwa, the last king of pre-independence king of Rwanda.
