Who is Liana Fiol?
Liana Fiol Matta Born on October 20 1946 in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico was the most junior Associate Justice of the Puerto Rico Supreme Court for over four years. Due to the retirement of two justices and the death of a third, in the following two years she became the most senior Justice on July 31, 2010. Appointed by Governor Sila Calderón in 2004 to succeed the court's first female Justice, her nomination was confirmed in a partisan vote by the Puerto Rico Senate and she was sworn in on February 19, 2004.
Prior to her appointment to the Supreme Court, she was a high-profile member of Puerto Rico's Circuit Court of Appeals.
