Who is Jorge Casco?
Jorge Casco was an Argentine A-4C Skyhawk pilot of Argentine Air Force Grupo 4. A photograph of his plane being refueling in flight en route to the Falkland Islands during the Falklands War became one of the most iconic images of the war. Casco's plane crashed in bad weather on South Jason Island during the war, and Casco was killed. Lieutenant Casco’s remains were discovered by the UK military on South Jason Island within the wreckage of his aircraft. At Argentine request, the remains were returned in July 2008 for DNA testing. Following confirmation that they belonged to Lt Casco, his family requested that he be buried at the Argentine Military Cemetery at Port Darwin. He was buried on 7 March 2009. His burial required the co-operation with the Falkland Islands and Argentine governments with arrangements handled with the utmost respect for the needs and wishes of Lt. Casco’s family.
