Who was Luagalau Levaula Kamu?
Luagalau Levaula Kamu was a lawyer and Minister of Public Works in Samoa, whose assassination shocked the Samoan and Pacific Islands community.
Having been trained as a lawyer in New Zealand, at Victoria and Auckland Universities, he served as a chairman of the Samoan Advisory Council in New Zealand, and had practised law in Samoa before entering parliament.
He was fatally shot during a social function celebrating the 20th anniversary of the ruling Human Rights Protection Party. His assassin was a 34-year-old man, Eletise Leafa Vitale, the son of Leafa Vitale who had been the previous Minister of Public Works. Involved in the plot was another politician, erstwhile Minister of Post and Telecommunications Toi Aukuso.
His wife is Maiava Visekota Kamu-Peteru, a lawyer and former Member of Parliament.
